Last Saturday (7th March) over 120 women joined our first female president, Leigh Bromell, to celebrate International Women’s Day.

The inaugural event was attended by local women of all ages who gathered to enjoy a high tea, donated by the club.

Professional social butterfly, Breffni O’Rourke, introduced the line up of speakers who all delivered short inspirational talks. These women of influence represented their chosen fields of government, the arts, business, education and medicine within the Nelson/Tasman community.

  • Judene Edgar - Councillor, TDC
  • Alison Boswijk - International Projects Manager, World of Wearable Art
  • Dot Kettle - CEO, Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce
  • Cathy Ewing - Principal, Nelson College for Girls
  • Annette Milligan - Director, INP Medical Clinic

Over $1800 was raised on the day, $1200 from a charity auction and the remainder from ticket sales. All monies raised will be split between three local female focussed charities.

  • Nelson Regional Breast & Gynaecological Cancer Trust
  • Nelson Women’s Refuge
  • Nelson Women’s Centre

We'd like to acknowledge the support we received from all the local businesses that donated charity auction items, we also owe our thanks to Breffni, Tracy Black (auctioneer) and the fabulous line up of speakers who gave their valuable time. It was heartening to see so many women in our community enjoy this inspiring event and truly celebrate each other. It seems that everybody had a fine time, there were certainly calls at the end of the day to make this an annual event.

One of the young ladies who attended the event, wrote her own article about it... Read it HERE.
