Have you tried Line Dancing at your Suburban Club?
If you haven't now is the time to give it a whirl, we're lucky to have Diane Sutherland run all the Line Dancing sessions at the club, she has 21 years experience, but more importantly an endless enthusiasm and passion that is infectious! It's why so many members are already hooked!
We asked Diane a few of the burning questions that you might have asked yourself...
Q - What's the history behind line dancing? Where did it all begin?
A - It started in World War 1. Soldiers would kick up their heels and started making up steps and dancing in lines as they were all men. There's a common misapprehension that it started in the U.S.A. but apparently it didn't!
Q - What are the fitness benefits of line dancing?
A - It's a great cardio workout, which means it burns calories. It tones your body and improves your posture. It's also an excellent memory improver, we all say that. It generates an overall feeling of well being.
Q - Do I need a partner to come along?
A - No, definitely not. We have both men and women in our classes. Line dancers do not come into physical contact with each other.
Q - Do I need previous dance experience?
A - No! If you can count to 4 you are half way there.
Q - I'm worried about coming along because I'm not very co-ordinated. Does that matter?
A - It's a proven fact that you can learn co-ordination. It really is very easy to learn line dancing and you're in a great supportive environment
Q - What should I wear?
A - Just wear what you are comfortable in. Shoes need to be a smoother sole and supportive, avoid high heels. Sports shoes are unsuitable as the soles stick on the floor.
Q - What sort of music will I dance to?
A - All kinds of music, that's what keeps it interesting.
Q - Is there a caller?
A - Yes, but not like a barn dance. The routines are learned as in a 32 count dance. 4 lots of 8 = 32.
Q - When are the classes, and who are they for?
A - All classes are suitable for all genders and ages, from 5 years old to 90 years old! The oldest people I currently teach are two very fit and competent ladies one turning 80 and one turning 81. They are truly amazing, they do everything the younger members of the group do. We have teenagers and young mums learning too. I'm really keen to start a class for children, if there are mothers out there who would like their children to learn please contact me (03 547 9280) and if there is enough interest I will start a new class! Current classes running are...
- Tuesday - 10:30 am - 12:30 pm
- Thursday - 10:00 am - Midday
- Thursday - 6:15 pm - 7:15 pm (Aerobic Line Dancing)
Q - How much does it cost?
A - Just $5, and classes are open to members of the club and non-members.
